THE GREAT INDIAN EXODUS
" hum kaha jaye is lockdown mai? jab hamare pas kuch nahi hai"
-Your neighborhood migrant
We all saw a recent story of a girl who traveled from gurugram to some village in Bihar covering 1200km, what did she get, an invitation from the cycle Federation, and praise from Ivanka trump. Did she purposely ride a bicycle to get this? we humans have failed the meaning of humanity, we could have helped her and her father reach home through some means of transport rather than a mere cycle, we could have helped them by giving some food and shelter, but what did we do?
CORONA, the most deadly virus which shook the entire
mankind this generation is still continuing taking lives of many, the only
people who are affected by this are migrants.
Migration is done mainly due to poverty, hunger, and the source of income. Most of them travel far distances just to feed their
families at home. People from Maharashtra, Bihar, Jharkhand, and other eastern
states, to metropolitan cities, do get some work but end up becoming
daily wage labor, barber, cleaner, and even your favorite Gol Gappa guy.
These 60 days, we have witnessed the horrible plight
of the migrant workers stranded across the country, thrown out by their
landlords, without food, without wages with walking back to their home states
being the only option left amid the pandemic gloom. We are in tik-tok, YouTube,
Instagram and many other social platforms and we have seen many viral videos,
here are some stories which might prick your heart.
As per a report in The Indian Express, Ram Pukar
Pandit (38) has been living in Nawada and working in Delhi for over a decade.
Earning Rs 7,000-Rs 8,000 a month, he would meet his family once in two-three
months while his younger brother took care of his one son and three daughters
back home. 11th May, his wife called from Bihar’s Begusarai to tell him that
their one-year-old baby who had a stomach infection, had died. Unable to get a
bus or a train, he set off on foot with one thought in his head “to see the
child one last time” but was reportedly stopped by Ghaziabad Police near UP
Gate. His real shattering story behind that picture and it will surely leave
you feeling that we have failed a father and the entire migrant community.
While the honorable prime minister, extended the lockdown towards phase 3, a small WhatsApp rumor, yes, a small viral message
stating that there will be trains back to their villages caused chaos in Bhandara station. Poor
migrants rushed to the railway station without caring about the ongoing
pandemic. The heart-wrenching scene in the railway station left many people
shattered, to what extent social media can spread fake news. did you know-how harmful bleaching powder on humans? and did you know that this chemical is being sprayed on migrants mercilessly?
We people living in big lavish houses and apartments,
started coming out of the house just to get essential items, to make what? “Dolgona
coffee”? While we had something to eat, migrants on the
streets had nothing to eat, their kids were on the street, sleeping without eaten since
days. Some of them even traveled thousands of kilometers to reach their home.
How will this battle faced by India’s migrant laborers ultimately turn out?
In the short term, they will lose. In the long term,
they will win. Because can you imagine a city like Mumbai without migrants? In
fact, migrants constitute some 30%-40% of the economies of many cities. You
cannot run the economy without them. You can reopen industries, but how will
they function without migrant workers. One can already feel the scarcity in
Kerala, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu.
So what can we citizens help these migrants?
We know hunger is the main issue to them, we can start
procuring food from hotels or start making one. If one street can prepare food
for 800 to 1200 migrants, just imagine what we all can do. TRY NOT TO GIVE MONEY, because you know liquor shops are open too.
"lets hope they all reach their home safe"
