SILENT VICTIMS

An elephant, 15 years old with a baby in her womb, died in Velliyar River near the borders of Palakkad on May 27. The animal entered the river and stood in the water for hours after it consumed the cracker-filled fruit. The cracker is believed to have exploded inside the elephant's mouth when it chewed the fruit. Guess why this pineapple was used? Reports tell that it might have been used for some other animal but the elephant came in contact, while some others tell it was used by the farmers to protect their farms.
Even though it was for protection, how cruel can we humans be towards animals? This is not the first instance, animals have all the rights in the world to live just like humans. Since they can’t speak for themselves doesn’t mean that we misuse them and show our authority towards them in the form of “Animal Cruelty”.
We here at writers deck have revealed few horrific instances of how we humans have treated them as cheap toys for our own use.

1.       PUPPY MILLS:

Do you guys know there is a factory setup to breed dogs for money? Yes, shocked right. Animals such as dogs are kept under captive and used to raise puppies for money, it emphasis more on profit than on the health of the animals. In these mills, many puppies are plagued with illnesses like heart or kidney disease as a result of the poor conditions in which they are kept. Female dogs are bred with little to no recovery time between their litters. When female dogs reach the stage when they are unable to reproduce litter, they are often killed.

    2.    GREYHOUND DOGS             KILLING:
The Greyhound dogs are known for the fast speed and grace to have been exploited for humans to benefit from the age of Egyptians. In a horrific example of the industry’s cruelty, in 2002 the remains of approximately 3,000 greyhounds from Florida racetracks were discovered on the Alabama property of a former racetrack security guard who had been “retiring” unwanted greyhounds with a .22-caliber rifle for more than 40 years. Yes, an industry! These greyhounds are still being misused in other parts of the world, sometimes they are dead in the fast lane.
Two years back, we have seen two adults doing a tik-tok with their stray dog and later throw the dog from a three-story building. It has become a hotbed for animal abuse, there are instances people use the video-sharing platform to abuse animals in the name of fun and then share it to gain followers.
4.    LAB EXPERIMENTATION AND GENETIC MANIPULATION:
We know most of the monkeys and rats are used for clinical trials for most of the vaccine trials, for example, COVID-19 vaccine trails. What if this fails and they die? Who is responsible? Those animals didn’t sign up for that. Genetic manipulation is done by animals to increase their productivity, fast-forward their growth, etc. This has increased significantly in recent years and it badly impacts the overall health of animals. Approximately 90% of the broiler chickens (chicken bred specifically for meat production) have trouble walking due to their genetic manipulation.

These are just few instances, there are many still going on. Well, let’s discuss on what we can do to protect their rights.
1.   Wildlife protection act 1972: It protects wild animals from poaching, hunting, and other activities. It extends to the whole of India.
2. PACT act: detailed information is given in the link.
3. Here are some other Indian laws which "protect" the animals.https://www.scoopwhoop.com/animal-protection-laws-in-india/
